The It Girl by Ruth Ware

This is my first time reading anything from Ruth Ware. According to several reviews, she’s been coined the Agatha Christie of our time. If that’s not a reigning endorsement, then I don’t know what is. I love a good who dunnit mystery and this one delivers. As the title suggests, the “it” girl is April Clark-Cliveden. She’s beautiful, rich, sometimes vicious, and Hannah Jones’ roommate and first friend at Oxford. During the first term they form a small group of friends with Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily – but April winds up dead by the end of the year.

Ten years later, the man convicted of her murder, John Neville, an Oxford porter, dies in prison. Relieved by the news, Hannah and Will, who are married and expecting their first child, can finally move on from the tragedy. However, when a young journalist starts asking questions, suggesting that Neville could be innocent, Hannah begins to doubt what she saw that night. After all, she was the star witness in the case against Neville. Hannah then reconnects with her old friends and soon realizes that things weren’t quite what they seemed back in Oxford. What are her friends not saying? What secrets are they keeping? Did one of them kill April?

This book had me guessing until the very end! Just when I thought I had everything figured out, BOOM! The book jumps between “before” and “after” April's death, which I love. When things start spiraling for Hannah, the story goes fast, and you won't want to put the book down. I give this book a 4 out 5 martinis.
