Every year on the first Monday in May, the most iconic red carpet, the exclusive Met Gala takes place in the historic Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Every year’s theme is just as outlandish as the year before. Who remembers “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” (2018) or “Camp: Notes on Fashion” (2019)? This year’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” is my favorite to date.
Lagerfeld passed away in February 2019 and leaves behind a career like no other. He was a fashion designer, creative director, artist, and photographer. He was the head of fashion houses like Balmain, Chloé, and Chanel. This year the stars came out and honored him in ways one never thought possible. Unthinkable mashups like Versace blend with Chanel, looks inspired by the famous tweed we all love so much, and collections from years past. It was poetry and truly one of the greatest moments in fashion history.
I usually do a top 5 or 10 but I just couldn’t. Men and women alike shined, and these were my faves:
Anne Hathaway in Versace and Chanel
Jessica Chastain in Gucci
Cardi B Chen Peng Studio
Lilly James in Tamara Ralph
Emily Blunt in Michael Kors
Paris Hilton in Mark Jacobs
Ariana DeBose in Altuzarra (that color!!)
Salma Hayek Pinault in Gucci
Margot Robbie in 1993 Chanel
Doja Cat in Oscar De La Renta
Penelope Cruz in Chanel
Kendall Jenner in Marc Jacobs
Bad Bunny in Jacquemus
Ke Huy Quan in Dior Men’s
Rita Ora in Prabal Gurung
Taikiki Waikiki in Prabal Gurung
Emily Ratajkowski in Tory Burch
Phoebe Bridgers in Tory Burch
Naomi Campbell in vintage Chanel
Giselle Bundchen in vintage Chanel
Maude Apatow in reimagined “arrow dress” from Lagerfeld for Chloé (1983)
Hugh Jackman in Zegna
Karlie Kloss in custom Loewe
Keke Palmer in Sergio Hudson (hitting us with that tweed vibe!)
So to be honest with you….I never understood met gala at all but also I’m not one that’s into fashion. I didn’t even know there was actually a reason for it not just stars being weird with it. So I went on the internet and saw all the ones you mentioned and more. Either it was very normal this year or this is how it’s always been. 😂 Either way great article.
