I
I promised a follow up to my post about the first movie. I’ve seen Maverick now a few times now and I love it. I mean really FREAKING loved it! I know that it pretty much follows the same formula of the first one and you know what? I’m not mad at it. Yes, the opening scene is the same and I mean really who can resist taking a ride into the danger zone? I know I don’t, especially since I know that Tom Cruise and Miles Teller will be there as well.
And it appears that Charlie was right about Maverick, he’s not happy unless he’s going Mach 10 with his hair on fire. And that’s what happened, well the plane caught fire and he parachuted out. But I digress. And yes, there was another angry bald man ripping him a new one sending him to Top Gun. Only the angry bald man was played by Ed Harris. Then we cut to Tom Cruise on his bike smiling as the fighter jet speeds past him. Perfection.
Now as my husband has said (several times), “there is nothing new, it’s like the other movie”. Yes, yes dear that’s true. But I don’t mind one bit. Slightly same story with a few tweaks. I mean didn’t you want to know what happened to Goose’s family? Did Iceman and Maverick really become friends as the ending of the original implied? Yes, and yes! Miles Teller’s Rooster is perfect. I swear he really could pass for Anthony Edwards’ son, mustache and all. Although, I don’t think Goose could be as cool. I mean can we have a moment for that gorgeous Ford Bronco?? Uh, I’ve always wanted one those.
Not everything was the same as the original. I think the best addition was “the admiral’s Daughter” played by Jennifer Connelly. I didn’t see that coming, it was mentioned two times in the first movie and that was it. Who would’ve thought they would do that? Connelly has never looked better, which is saying a lot because that woman always looks amazing. And then we have Val Kilmer’s return, Mr. Iceman himself. However short-lived, was amazing. Watching Maverick and Ice be besties is a vibe and I’m here for it.
And if you’ve read my other posts, you’ll know that I must mention the music. If not delivered correctly, it’s a deal breaker for me. Music is another character in a movie, and it has to be just right. Music delivered in spades. Well, I say that because OneRepublic delivered the song for the beach football scene. I’m a huge fan of theirs and especially Ryan Tedder. The man is a genius. Throw in Lady Gaga and it’s golden. If you’re wondering, did these 2 artists beat Kenny Loggins? Absolutely not! He’s a legend who not only created 2 iconic songs for the original Top Gun, but he also created song for another iconic movie. Um, does anyone remember Footloose?
If you’re looking for a movie to just and fun with, this is it. My girls enjoyed it as well. So, if you want a movie that does not include animation or an annoying princess, Top Gun: Maverick is it.
